Sweater Weather

I love warm weather and if you had asked me 10 years ago what my favorite season is I would have, without hesitation, responded "Summer!" . These days I'm not so sure. As I've gotten older I appreciate the change of seasons so much more. I love the Fall with it's changing leaves and crisp weather. I enjoy the Spring where I'm thinking about the first bloom of flowers and looking forward to my first bike ride of the season. I have also gained a deep appreciation for Winter, hunkering down at home with a cozy fire and a hot cup of tea, nesting and making delicious soup - winter is not so bad.

Here in the Northeast the weather gets the coldest in January. The average temperature is between 25°F and 38°F. This means that we still have 3 more months before we can expect to defrost.

As I think about my own plans for the coming weeks, I would like to add a few pieces to get me out of my winter fashion rut with items that will also complement my existing wardrobe. There are plenty of sweater options to choose from but if you're looking for a fun update, these may get you through the winter months with a bit more ease.

Fair Isle Sweaters

The Fair Isle sweater has been popping up this season from several designers. And while I have noticed the distinct characteristics of the pattern, I had no idea where it came from. Fair Isle knitting originated on the remote island of Fair Isle - a tiny jewel in the ocean lying midway between the Orkney and Shetland Islands to the north of Scotland in the UK, at the point where the Atlantic Ocean meets the North Sea. The traditional knitwear of Fair Isle and its intricate skill have been practiced continuously on this small Isle for generations. The traditional method of hand-knitting Fair Isle ‘in the round’ using double-pointed needles - known locally as ‘wires’- along with a special padded knitting belt, continues to this day. Designers have interpreted their own version of the Fair Isle sweater and these are a few of my favorites.

What about a sweater that covers your entire body? I happen to love the below jumpsuit for a ski trip or bopping around town, add a pair of white moon boots and and a long cozy puffer coat for a winter wardrobe update.

If your idea of a good time is heading to the slopes, you'll want to consider a few fun pieces to add to update your look. I love a graphic sweater paired back to black or white ski pants, a puffer coat, and a cute knit hat. If you're not a skier but instead prefer to enjoy a hot toddy by the fire, these will do well for that. law & order

Apres ski.

These really cute knit vests may not typically be what you think of when you're choosing sweaters. I envision wearing these over a long sleeve button down shirt and topping it with a great blazer or long coat.

Stay warm!

Best,

Maria
